Ear Flushing

Ear Flushing

  1. Instill the Chlorhexiderm Otic ear cleanser into the ear/ears liberally. You should hear a good squishy sound when you squeeze the ear.
  2. Wait 1-2 minutes.
  3. Use a flush solution. We can provide you with one (Septisol Flush) or you may make it up using 1 part of liquid soap (dawn, baby shampoo, joy, ivory) with 3 or 4 parts of warm water. (Soapy enough that it feels soapy to you).
  4. Use an ear bulb syringe (available in two sizes at drug stores or at our hospital for your convenience). Small size for cats and small dogs (less than 20 lbs.), large size for all others. Flush firmly into the affected ear/ears 3-4 times or until you no longer see debris in the flush as it comes out.
  5. Rinse the ear/ears 3-4 times with warm water to remove all of the soap
  6. Use a cotton ball or Q-tips to remove the wax and dirt off of the external part of the ear.
  7. Repeat as often as needed. Most dogs who are wax producers and therefore prone to ear infections will need it weekly. Other dogs will need it less frequently. Dogs with heavy ear flaps (Cockers, Retrievers, Bassets), and dogs who go into the water will need it frequently and often throughout the year.
  8. A dehydrating agent (Swimmer's Ear) may be helpful in getting the residual moisture out of the ear, but the normal shaking should do the job.
  9. CAUTION: If there are signs of infection or of severe irritation, or if the process of flushing is too painful, please consult us before you continue. Physical and emotional trauma may result from improper use of the flushing. Do not attempt a flush if the ear condition has not been under current care, if there is any head tilt, exposure to foreign bodies, foxtails and any suspicion or history of ear drum rupture.

Be sure to get instructions on how to leave an "escape hatch" for the flush so you don't cause any damage to the ear.
